The Petres Gorge is located 10 km west of Rethymno town. Along the highway is a church with a car park and here you can enter the gorge. It has water all year round and forms an important wetland of Crete, especially at its mouth near Episkopi. In wintertime and early spring there is too much water to cross the gorge. There is a rich flora and fauna and especially at the end of this gorge, close to the sea, you can find many snakes! There are some points that needs  little attention, where there are large rocks and require some climbing. In general a few people walk this gorge!
