On Crete there are several local (specialised) tourist offices or freelance walking guides that offer walking tours on Crete. With these companies you can book locally a guided walking tour and you don't need to book a walking holiday in advance. 

So, why to walk with a guide? Walking with a local guide has many advantages above walking on your own. Some advantages are:

• You will see places that you would never find on your own. Many paths in Crete are difficult to find and not shown on any maps or described in guide books
• The guide usually speaks the local language and can tell you a lot about the flora and fauna, history, local customs and many other things
• You don't get lost and if something goes wrong there is always somebody to help you
• Nice atmosphere of the group. Often at the end of the walk you eat and drink something altogether.
